Saudi Arabia Leads $55 Billion EA Take-Private Deal in the Largest Leveraged Buyout in Gaming History

Electronic Arts (EA) has officially become a private company following the completion of a $55 billion take-private transaction led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) in partnership with Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, marking one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the global gaming industry.
The landmark transaction gives the investor consortium control of one of the world's most influential game publishers. Following the completion of the deal, PIF reportedly owns 93.4% of the newly private company, further strengthening its position in the gaming sector.
The acquisition includes approximately $20 billion in debt financing, making it the largest leveraged buyout (LBO) ever completed, surpassing previous global buyout records and becoming one of the most significant private equity transactions across any industry.
Founded in 1982, EA is the publisher behind globally recognized franchises including EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, Battlefield, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Need for Speed. As a private company, EA is expected to gain greater flexibility to pursue long-term strategic initiatives without the quarterly reporting pressures associated with public markets while continuing to invest in its flagship franchises.
The transaction comes as the global gaming industry continues to consolidate around blockbuster intellectual property. Recent years have witnessed several mega-deals, including Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, its $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media (Bethesda), and Take-Two Interactive's $12.7 billion acquisition of Zynga.
CEO Andrew Wilson, who remains at the helm of the company, told employees:
"the completion of the deal marks the beginning of a new chapter for EA," expressing confidence that private ownership will create greater opportunities for creativity, long-term investment, and future growth.
Industry observers expect EA to continue prioritizing major franchises such as Battlefield, EA Sports FC, Madden, and The Sims, while balancing long-term investments with the financial commitments associated with one of the largest leveraged buyouts ever executed.
