Coursera to Acquire Udemy in a $2.5 Billion Landmark Merger

The online education sector marked a major strategic milestone as Coursera announced a merger agreement with rival Udemy, creating a combined entity valued at approximately $2.5 billion—a move that reflects broader shifts in the post-pandemic online learning market.
The agreement, announced on December 17, 2025, will see Coursera acquire Udemy in an all-stock transaction. The merger is expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and shareholder consent.
The deal comes amid ongoing market headwinds for both companies. Despite reporting revenue growth in the third quarter of 2025, shares of Coursera and Udemy declined during the year, highlighting increasing competitive pressure and investor concerns over long-term returns.
Beyond its financial scope, the merger represents a strategic combination of complementary strengths. Coursera is widely known for its partnerships with leading universities and institutions, while Udemy operates a large marketplace powered by thousands of independent instructors and skills-focused content.
Together, the companies aim to strengthen their position in enterprise learning and workforce upskilling, particularly across high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, and software development, as organizations invest more heavily in reskilling initiatives.
The transaction signals a maturing phase in the online education market, where platforms are increasingly turning toward consolidation and strategic alignment to enhance scalability, resilience, and long-term growth—potentially paving the way for further mergers across the EdTech sector.
