Amazon to Invest Over $10 Billion in OpenAI

Reports from Bloomberg and CNBC indicate that Amazon is in advanced discussions to invest over $10 billion in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, potentially including an agreement to use its AI chips. This comes after OpenAI’s October restructuring, which allows the company to partner beyond Microsoft, which has invested more than $13 billion since 2019.
OpenAI plans to spend $38 billion on cloud computing services from Amazon Web Services over seven years, relying on AWS Trainium chips in a competitive race with Nvidia and Google. Its infrastructure commitments are expected to reach $1.4 trillion in the coming years, despite annual revenues of only $13 billion.
Future plans include a potential IPO worth up to $1 trillion, along with strategic deals such as a $300 billion partnership with Oracle to build new data centers and collaboration with Nvidia for access to cutting-edge AI chips.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the need for rapid action amid increasing competition from Google and its latest updates to Gemini, declaring an internal state of emergency to strengthen efforts to lead in global AI.
