Verascient Raises $1.2M to Build AI Infrastructure for Smarter Enterprise Operations

Verascient, a promising South African artificial intelligence startup, has successfully raised $1.2 million in its inaugural funding round, which was oversubscribed, reflecting growing confidence in the company’s approach to transforming disparate corporate knowledge into a coherent context for AI agents.

The round attracted prominent investors including Founder Collective, known for backing major companies such as Uber and Airtable, alongside Andrena Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise, and Summit Ventures. Angel investors Alan Knott-Craig and Shayne Mann also participated in the round.

Founded by Emile Ferreira and Keagan Stokoe, Verascient is pioneering intelligent business operations by working directly within client organizations to unify information distributed across documents, emails, internal systems, and other platforms. This knowledge is then used to build workflows and AI agents designed to make daily operations more intelligent and efficient.

The startup is initially targeting sectors including financial services, insurance, and logistics—industries characterized by significant volumes of siloed data and strong potential to benefit from Verascient’s technology.

Innovative Infrastructure and AI Capabilities

At the core of Verascient’s technology is a temporal knowledge graph, designed to maintain a holistic view of an organization’s data while preserving historical information, permissions, and provenance.

According to Emile Ferreira, who leads Verascient’s technological efforts, businesses often provide employees with AI tools without the infrastructure required to enable truly intelligent operations.

Verascient aims to bridge this gap by working directly with enterprises to understand and optimize their processes, enabling AI agents to operate effectively within existing frameworks.

The company’s approach focuses on revenue-related activities, operations, customer experiences, decision-making, and delivery. By continuously refining its systems, Verascient aims to ensure that each improvement makes subsequent enhancements easier to achieve, creating a compounding effect, as highlighted by Keagan Stokoe.

A central element of Verascient’s model is the seamless integration of its infrastructure with the expertise of in-house AI engineers. The team works closely with clients to support the effective deployment of AI solutions.

Stokoe emphasizes the importance of professionals who not only understand complex technologies but also recognize the practical requirements of implementing them in everyday business environments.

Founders with Vision and Expertise

Emile Ferreira, Verascient’s CTO, brings a strong background in AI innovation. He taught himself to code at the age of 12 and later made significant contributions to Replit, a technology company valued at more than $9 billion. His early development of an on-device AI assistant attracted more than 200,000 users and earned him an innovation award.

Ferreira completed an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science from Cambridge and co-authored significant research with global organizations including the United Nations.

Keagan Stokoe, a prominent member of South Africa’s technology ecosystem, played a key role in establishing Fibertime, which serves more than 1.5 million monthly users. His venture, Purple Dorm, operated as an AI consultancy for organizations across regions including South Africa and the UK.

With its newly acquired funding, Verascient plans to strengthen its engineering department and expand its technological capabilities to support more enterprise-level AI deployments.

Stokoe said the company aims to recruit the top 1% of AI engineering talent from South Africa to accelerate Verascient’s growth trajectory.
