OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health with Enhanced Privacy Safeguards

OpenAI has officially launched a new feature, ChatGPT Health, in the United States, allowing users to share medical records and health data from apps such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Peloton to receive more personalized responses related to health and wellbeing.

OpenAI clarified that ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, and is designed to support—not replace—medical care, helping users understand test results, prepare for doctor visits, track health patterns, and compare health insurance options.

The company emphasized that ChatGPT Health conversations are stored separately from other chats and will not be used to train its core AI models, with additional encryption layers in place. Users can also manage, disconnect, or delete their health data at any time.

“New AI health tools offer the promise of empowering patients and promoting better health outcomes, but health data is some of the most sensitive information people can share and it must be protected.”

Andrew Crawford, from the US-based non-profit Center for Democracy and Technology, stressed the importance of maintaining “airtight” safeguards around personal health information, particularly as AI companies push further into personalized services.

Meanwhile, Max Sinclair, CEO and founder of AI marketing platform Azoma, described the launch as a “watershed moment” that could reshape patient engagement with medical information and influence health-related purchasing decisions.

According to OpenAI, more than 230 million users ask ChatGPT questions about health every week. The feature was developed in collaboration with over 260 doctors from 60 countries across multiple medical specialties.

ChatGPT Health is initially available to a small group of early users, with a waitlist now open. The feature has not yet launched in the UK, Switzerland, or the European Economic Area, where stricter data protection regulations apply.
