MyFitnessPal Acquires Cal AI to Strengthen AI-Driven Nutrition Leadership

MyFitnessPal, the global leader in nutrition tracking, has officially announced its acquisition of the fast-growing startup Cal AI. The AI-powered calorie counting app, founded by two high school entrepreneurs, now joins the portfolio of the established industry leader. The move highlights the accelerating integration of artificial intelligence within the digital health and wellness landscape.

A Strategic Expansion into AI-Native Nutrition

The acquisition forms part of MyFitnessPal’s broader innovation roadmap, following its purchase of meal planner Intent and its integration with ChatGPT Health. The company continues to expand a diversified portfolio designed to support a wide range of consumer health journeys, reinforcing its competitive edge in digital nutrition.

The two platforms serve distinct yet complementary audiences, enabling broader market penetration.
MyFitnessPal supports users who prioritize detailed, science-backed weight management tracking, while Cal AI appeals to those seeking a fast, intuitive fitness-focused experience.

CEO Mike Fisher emphasized that no single product can effectively address every consumer’s unique health needs, underscoring the strategic value of maintaining both platforms.

The Rapid Rise of Cal AI

Cal AI’s trajectory from a high school project to a major market player stands as a compelling entrepreneurial story. Co-founders Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack built the app to achieve over 15 million downloads and generate more than $40 million in sales in under two years.

This remarkable growth positioned Cal AI as a formidable competitor and attracted strong industry attention.

Mike Fisher also highlighted the founders’ professionalism and discipline throughout the year-long acquisition discussions, noting that their commitment, combined with innovative AI technology, made Cal AI an exceptional strategic fit.

The Future of the Combined Portfolio

Cal AI will continue operating as a standalone product, preserving its brand identity and user-focused mission. MyFitnessPal has retained the entire seven-person Cal AI team, including its co-founders, ensuring operational continuity and sustained innovation.

Since the deal closed in December, Cal AI has already integrated with MyFitnessPal’s extensive nutrition database, which includes over 20 million foods and thousands of brands.

This integration significantly enhances accuracy and functionality while maintaining the app’s core mission of delivering fast, AI-driven calorie estimates.

The acquisition marks a pivotal milestone in the evolution of digital wellness, strengthening MyFitnessPal’s leadership position while empowering Cal AI to scale with expanded resources and global reach.
