In a massive and unexpected deal, Savvy Games Group, the Saudi investment arm of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), has announced the acquisition of Niantic, Inc.’s gaming division by Scopely for $3.5 billion. This strategic move underscores Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plans to become a major player in the global gaming industry.
The acquisition includes some of the world’s most popular games, such as Pokémon GO, which has reached over 190 countries and regions, Pikmin Bloom, and the successful Monster Hunter Now. Additionally, accompanying apps and services like Niantic Campfire and Wayfarer will transition to Scopely following the deal’s completion.
Scopely confirmed that all members of Niantic’s game development team, including seasoned leaders Ki Kwai and Ed Wu, will continue to develop and operate their beloved games. Ed Wu, the lead executive for Pokémon GO, expressed optimism about the deal, stating that it would benefit the player community and the game’s future. He assured players that the Pokémon GO team would remain intact under Scopely’s umbrella.
Scopely revealed impressive statistics for Niantic’s gaming division, with Pokémon GO alone boasting over 20 million weekly active players and players collectively exploring more than 30 billion miles since its launch.
